Running Central, which has become one of the top fitness attire retailers in central Illinois, will join the move to the Warehouse District next spring, owner Adam White announced on Tuesday.

Running Central will move from its current location in Peoria Heights to 311 SW Water St. in downtown Peoria, former site of Illinois Antique Center. The move will take place after the 10,000-square-foot space is renovated and will occur around April 1, 2014.

White said the move to a location that is well over twice the size of the store at 4450 N. Prospect Road will accommodate recent growth "and allow the company to maintain superior customer service" to all its customers for footwear, apparel and accessories.

It also will have room for the RC Kids Zone, described as a "playful area specifically designed for children's footwear."

"This will be a one-of-a-kind facility. Running stores across the United States are recreating the look and feel of this building from 1903," White said. "We are excited to part of the revival of the Warehouse District. It is a natural fit with our customers in the tri-county area, along with so many of our events starting and finishing on the Riverfront."

The move will create more jobs, as well, he said.

Slowly but surely businesses are taking note of and moving into the Warehouse District that includes riverfront properties and extends beyond the immediate downtown area to include buildings along Southwest Water, Washington and Adams streets.

One of the more recent new businesses to open is Sugar, a restaurant on Adams Street just down from Dozer Park that already is doing great business despite the construction that is making the streets in the area more business friendly.
