The season begins Sept. 28 at 8 p.m. in the
Peoria Civic Center Theatre with a concert titled
Passion & Power.” Guest artist is pianist Olga
Kern, winner the Van Cliburn International
Piano Competition in 2001.
On Oct. 19, also at the Civic Center, the PSO will
present “Yin & Yang,” with guest artist Charles
Yang, whom the Boston Globe said “plays
classic violin with the charisma of a rock star.”
That’s fitting as that concert will feature music
from Tchaikovsky to the Beatles.
On Nov. 9, at Grace Presbyterian Church on
Illinois Route 91, the Symphony will bring the
Allure of Paris” to its audience, with PSO prin-
cipals Katherine Lewis on the viola and Nicole
Luchs on the harp.
A little lighter fare is planned for the Jan. 19
concert at the Civic Center with “Matinee at the
Movies.” With emcees Greg Batton and Dan
DiOrio, the local radio personalities, music will
presented from romantic, action and epic films.
They include Superman, Spiderman and Bat-
man; Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings and Les
Miserables; Casablanca, Dr. Zhivago and Gone
with the Wind and much more.
On Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14, romance will take
the Civic Center stage “with everything from
torch songs to love ballads, and even a tango
or two.” Guest artists will be soprano Linden
Christ and tenor Ryan Lanning in the annual
Valentine’s concert.
Violin virtuoso Paul Kantor will be the guest art-
ist for the March 15 concert at Grace Presbyte-
rian Church. “Vivaldi’s Four Seasons” will pres-
ent “a feast of baroque and romantic music.”
Bela Fleck, the 14-time Grammy Award win-
ning banjo player, will join the PSO on the Civic
Center stage to “celebrate the style and energy
of American music and that uniquely American
instrument, the banjo.” Music will be Fleck’s
own concerto as well as pieces by Leonard Ber-
stein and Aaron Copland.
The 2013-14 season will close with the Mother’s
Day concert “Daydreams,” featuring mezzo-
soprano Nina Yoshida Nelson and her husband
Jeff Nelson on the French horn.
