ARTHRITIS CAN STRIKE ANY ONE
AT ANY AGE. STAYING ACTIVE
HELPS MINIMIZE THE EFFECTS.
by Paul Gordon
Y
ou’ve seen the commer-
cials on television and
heard what the experts
have said: Staying active is the
best way to keep the effects of
arthritis at a minimum.
It’s for that reason the Arthritis
Foundation’s signature fundrais-
ing event, the Arthritis Walk, is
one that gets people moving,
sometimes with their dog along-
side them. After all, dogs are
prone to arthritis, too.
The Arthitis Walk itself is
June 1, but the local chapter of
the foundation has some kick-
off events schedules to increase
awareness of the Walk and of
the severity of the disease for
which there is no cure, said Beth
Stewart, director of special events
for the Arthritis Foundation in
Central Illinois.
The first kick-off event is a day
with your family and dog at the
PetSmart store in East Peoria on
April 13, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
There will be different pet ven-
dors, dog adoption agencies, and
a bouncy house for the kids.
You can also learn about differ-
ent ways to help out the Arthritis
Foundation and support those
that are suffering with arthritis,
Stewart said.
While at that event people
interested in participating in the
Arthritis Walk, which is sched-
uled for June 1 — a one-mile
walk, a walk with your dog or
a 5K starting at MidState Col-
lege — can sign up, get packets
of information and tips on how
to get pledges to raise money for
the walk.
